Luffa Aegyptiaca - EDALFOP
Establishing Diverse Application of “Luffa Aegyptiaca” for Functional Objects Production
Project partners: Nkumba University (Entebbe/Uganda), Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, University of Applied Arts Vienna
The aim of the research project EDALFOP is to explore the diverse material applicability of Luffa ‘Aegyptiaca’, and to develop functional objects that can enhance community livelihoods. Luffa ‘Aegyptiaca’ is a fast-growing, annual vine that grows in tropical and subtropical conditions. The plant produces fruit that when fully ripened is very fibrous, and in a dried state takes on a polyporous, lightweight structure. By involving local community women and youth groups, the potential of utilizing Luffa to produce objects for income generation is being investigated.
The role of the University of Applied Arts Vienna is to explore the potential of Luffa through art-based experiments, design workshops and practical studio production, and to document and disseminate the activities. The project is funded by the Austrian-African Research Network Africa-UniNet.
