The HILO Spinning Machine is an open-source tool that brings yarn production directly into workshops, maker spaces, and educational institutions. With its digital interface, HILO enables experimentation with rapid prototyping and the creation of custom-designed yarns. Sara Díaz Rodríguez, the inventor of HILO, offers insights into the development of the machine’s hardware and software, as well as her creative process in designing it.
This talk opens the series DIGITAL TOOLS FOR TEXTILE ART EDUCATION, organized by the Department of Textiles – Free, Applied, and Experimental Artistic Design. The series explores how open-source technologies and digital tools are transforming textile production and education, while opening up new creative possibilities.
