Artist Talk: Marei Loellmann
Marei Loellmann works with textiles, both independently and in collective contexts. Her interdisciplinary practice challenges socially embedded structures such as binary classifications and linear conceptions of time, which shape the relationship between body and environment. The body itself, as both a medium and an active force, is central to her exploration. Her works, made from materials such as ash, sediments, cement, handwoven elements, and fabrics, bear traces of land, time, and the body. Through their materiality and the collaborative production processes on-site, they address identity as a fleeting, continuously evolving state.
Loellmann studied fashion design and stage design at Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin and Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Her works have been presented in various contexts, including Kunstraum Kreuzberg, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and Galerie Gosserez in Paris. She has received grants and scholarships from institutions such as the Berlin Senate (2024) and Stiftung Kunstfonds (2023, 2022). In 2024, she was a fellow at Künstlerdorf Schöppingen Foundation and the Goldrausch Künstlerinnenprojekt.
