Based on the methods of the bioregional approach – finding, connecting, implementing, and sharing – Biofabrique Vienna operates as a network as well as a knowledge and production platform that processes raw and reclaimed materials tailored to the resources and needs of the respective bioregion. The project positions itself as a living lab for material innovation, design research, and urban circular economy, with the aim of creating a European model for sustainable, city-regional value chains.
The new project Wiener Farben is dedicated to researching and applying textile dyes derived from previously unused organic residual materials, for example from food production. Seeds, leaf greens, and other non-edible components are transformed into the raw material for a new, authentic Viennese color palette. The goal of the project is to create an aesthetically and ecologically convincing alternative to synthetic dyes and globally standardized color concepts.
The project is being implemented within the course Textile Production Fields by Karin Altmann. It involves research, experiments, and mappings of local resources and material flows in the Vienna metropolitan area, and will be presented during Vienna Design Week 2026. First results were already showcased during Vienna Design Week 2025.
